Les Bouquinistes of the Seine

Les Bouquinistes of the Seine

INTRA MUROS and EN PASSANT

Paris, France

2023, Photograph

This image captures a classic Parisian bookstall along the Seine, a tradition dating back to the 16th century. The "bouquinistes," as these booksellers are known, have been granted the right to sell books, postcards, and vintage art along the river since the 1850s. These green-painted stalls have become an enduring symbol of Paris, showcasing the city’s rich literary history and serving as a sanctuary for rare books, art prints, and old magazines. They reflect Paris’s devotion to art, literature, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The bookstalls not only attract locals and tourists alike but also serve as a meeting point for those who appreciate the charm and nostalgia of Paris’s past. This cultural landmark is so revered that in 1991, the banks of the Seine, along with the bouquinistes, were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognising their historical and cultural significance.

Perfect for book lovers and Francophiles, this image adds a touch of vintage Paris to your decor, ideal for libraries, reading nooks, or living rooms.
